On this page, Guidelines, Goals, & Common Questions.
Poesis MagaZine is a broad project of sorts that features interviews, reviews, writing, art, music, and basically anything we feel like. This zine is a new upstart and will begin to develop a feel for which we expect our prospective contributors will research thoughtfully before submitting. That said, let's introduce guidelines for what we hope to publish. If you have something you believe resonates with this publication, but doesn't fit into our guidelines, send it on. If it fits, it fits.
** Please note that all submissions are by email to submit2poesis@gmail.com. Indicate the category in the subject. **
** Works (except artwork, audio, or film excerpts) published by Poesis acquire first North American serial rights and anthology rights. Poesis does accept simultaneous submissions; however, you must notify Poesis immediately if your work has been accepted for publication elsewhere. We do not accept previously published work. **
**When submissions are open or closed, a note will be posted by each section, such as WRITING: CLOSED **
Submissions are CLOSED for review
MUS(E)IC CLOSED
Please note that this category is open to interpretation: including film or anything somewhat auditory. The category will gain definition as the zine grows. Current guidelines outline music.
Any DIY labels, New Wave, Experimental, Shoegaze, Noise, and Indie, and underground mainstream are especially up for review or feature... Our focus is on the little guy. It's got to have intent, soul, and basically move us. Whether it's an interview, review, or audio feature. Don't email Poesis attachments or links to your music. Not to be mean, but we can't comb through all those emails. Your best bet is to friend us on MySpace if you are a musician. It's a "stumble upon" type of thing.
ALL MUS(E)IC INTERVIEWS are by assignment and usually by a staff writer or intern. Still, query the editor with two samples of your work and a brief cover letter, along with your contact information.
ALL MUS(E)IC REVIEWS are by submission. This means that if you hear something you like, or if Poesis craves a review of a certain musician and queries readers, then you submit it! All Mus(e)ic reviews must be between 200-500 words for a release and 500-1500 words for a creative approach--i.e. a review of the development of an artist, a concert, etc. Take a chance on your work; we just might love it. Send your submissions in Arial 10 pt or Times New Roman 12 pt, double-spaced. Include a cover page with your contact information. Include in the subject line "MUS(E)IC review: title."
If any original photographs accompany your work, please submit those separately if yours, or inform your photographer about the submission process. See ART submissions for more details.
WRITING / Lit CLOSED
We are interested in something that grabs and holds our attention--a piece that has a strong voice--that says what it says in an honest and constructive way. In comparison to most journals, Poesis will feature mainly fiction and poetry in terms of the traditional concentrations of most literary magazines. Differentiating ourselves from other publications, we hope to publish other written forms as well; submit works you feel resonate with Poesis, but be kind to us in regards to length and staying close to submission guidelines.
Poesis hopes to feature writing that successfully uses experimental structure, style, and voice. We are interested in works that bridge the literary and genre worlds--that force our imagination into unexplored territory which the everyday individual relates to (especially in thoughts s/he rarely shares). Vague? Perhaps. Poesis is an experiment, a project, a work of art...
For POETRY, the contributor should submit no more than 3 poems. The author should include a brief bio/pic in the email submission. Attach the poems to the email in a doc or rtf format, with a cover page detailing the author's name, email, and poem titles. Each poem should be on a separate page. The author's name or contact information should not be on a poem with the page. Poesis reviews work blindly.
For FICTION, the contributor should submit no more than one story. For short story, an author may submit a story between 2000-5000 words. For flash fiction, an author may submit a story between 100-500 words. The author should include a brief bio in the email submission. The subject line of the email should include "FICTION." Attach the fiction piece to the email in a doc or rtf format, with a cover page detailing the author's name, email, and title. The author's name or contact information should not be on any page of the actual fiction piece. Poesis reviews work blindly.

BOOK REVIEW CLOSED
In addition to our staff Book Reviewer, Aaron Brewington, we encourage writers to submit reviews. Query Poesis with two samples of your work and a brief cover letter, along with your contact information. Details of assignment and format guidelines will be sent to you upon acceptance of your application. If you have interest or access to a particular book for review, please query the editor. Include "BOOK REVIEW" in the subject line of any email.
Book Reviews will also be featured on our Library Thing!
ART CLOSED
All types of visual artists may submit 3 original, previously unpublished works via attachment. Images can be submitted in jpg, pdf, or tif formats at 150 dpi or greater (300 dpi is ideal). In the subject line of your submission include "ART." While we appreciate varying subject matter and styles, Poesis will lean towards publishing works that go with the feel of each overall issue. Please include in your submission a brief bio, which should state a little about your work and yourself.
The artist retains full ownership and copyright of submitted works.
** Artists, particularly PHOTOGRAPHERS, whose work accompanies an article or written piece, etc., should note this in the body of the email submission to Poesis. **
~~WHAT YOU'RE DYING TO KNOW Q&A~~
a.k.a. Frequently Asked Publishing Questions:
What rate do you pay?
Currently, Poesis is a by-exposure publication, which means we can't pay our contributors or staff now, but we hope to one day. Your payment is exposure and that feeling of pride you get from being published.
When does Poesis publish?
Poesis aims to publish online 3x a year as a pdf flip book. Poesis aims to have a yearly anthology. This anthology may be DIY and handcrafted or print on demand (meaning you'll buy a copy for yourself, and the press will print it). Spread us like the plague, butter, or legs, and we might publish more often!
